Rules and Guidelines

The 2019 Anvil Awards are open to any company or individual located in the Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba), engaged in creating and or producing advertising, design/branding, websites, mobile applications, photography or illustrations. All entries must have run in their original form between December 1st, 2017 and December 31st, 2018. All entries must have been conceived and created in the Prairies.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS FEB 28, 2019 – 12:00 AM MST

The Anvil Awards may request proof of initial publication, posting or airdate as well as proof of creation or production dates.

Submissions that have been previously entered in the Anvil Awards and are material unchanged will not be eligible.

Entries may be moved into other categories at the judges’ discretion without the prior approval or consent of the entrant.

Please ensure no identifying marks or words appear on your entries.

All entries become property of Ad Rodeo and will not be returned. Ad Rodeo will also not be held liable for loss of any entry for any reason.

The entrant grants permission to show, duplicate or play entries as Ad Rodeo deems appropriate.

Ad Rodeo is not responsible for any entrant submission error. The decision of the judging panel and Ad Rodeo is final.  The judging committee reserves the right to disqualify material not submitted according to specifications for each category, without notification or refund.

broadcast

  • Radio Series: Best radio series broadcast on commercial radio.

  • Radio Single: Best radio single broadcast on commercial radio.

  • TV/Cinema Series: Best video advertisement series on television or cinema.

  • TV/Cinema Single: Best video advertisement single on television or cinema.

Craft Award

  • Animation: Best use of animation in a broadcast and non-broadcast video. Can be entered by an agency or by the animator.

  • Art Direction: Best use of art direction in a print, digital or broadcast campaign. . Can be entered by an agency or by the art director.

  • Copywriting: Best use of short or long-form copy in a print, digital or broadcast campaign. Can be entered by an agency or by the copywriter.

  • Illustration: Best use of illustration in a print, digital or branding package. Can be entered by an agency or by the illustrator.

  • Logo: Best new or redesigned trademarked logo.

  • Music or Sound Design: Best use of music or sound design in a digital or broadcast campaign. Can be entered by the agency, musician or technician.

  • Photography: Best use of photography in a print or digital campaign or branding package. Can be entered by an agency or by the photographer.

  • User Experience: Best use of UX for a website, microsite or mobile app . Can be entered by an agency or by the UX designer.

  • Videography: Best use of videography in a digital or broadcast campaign. Can be entered by an agency or by the photographer.

design

  • Annual Report: Best print, digital or broadcast annual report for any publicly traded, private or non-profit organization.

  • Brand Identity: Best new or redesigned brand identity package involving print or digital components. Examples include: business cards, stationery, website, blog, social media and e-commerce.

  • Brochure, Catalogue, or Book: Best print brochure or catalogue for a product, exhibition, service or institution.
    *Hard copies are encouraged

  • Packaging: Best packaging or labelling of a consumer product.

environmental

  • Branded Environment - Permanent: Best branded environment designed to be a permanent installation. Examples include: Retail graphics.

  • Branded Environment - Temporary: Best branded environment designed to be in use for under 12 months, or for a special event.

Illustration

  • Illustration Series: Best single illustration series using a traditional or digital medium

  • Illustration Single: Best single illustration single using a traditional or digital medium

Integrated

  • Integrated Campaign: Best ad campaign that uses a minimum of three different mediums to promote a product, service, or brand.

Mobile

  • Mobile Application: Best interactive smartphone or tablet experience including games, apps and other mobile entertainment.

None Traditional

  • Best Use of Innovative Technology: Best media entry that uses new technology to reach and engage with consumers in a creative way. Examples Include: VR, augmented reality, social media, digital billboards etc.

  • Non-Traditional: Best non-paid media entry. Examples include: guerrilla tactics, stunts, product interactions, installations and ambient advertising.

Online

  • Best Use of Social Media: Best use of social media to drive, enhance or spread awareness to a brand. Examples include: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat etc.

  • eCommerce Website: Best website with the primary function as a web storefront for a business or service. *Excludes entries submitted in the website categories.

  • Microsite: Best campaign-specific website directly related to a brand or its offerings.

  • Non-Broadcast Campaign: Best video series published online but not broadcast on television on cinema.

  • Non-Broadcast Single: Best video single published online but not broadcast on television or cinema.

  • Online Display Single/Campaign: Best static or interactive online banner ad single or series. Examples include: desktop and mobile.

  • Website: Best website for a product, service or brand not tied to a specific campaign, contest or special promotion. *Excludes entries submitted in the microsite category.

  • Website Under 30K: Best website under 30K for a product, service or brand not tied to a specific campaign, contest or special promotion. *Excludes entries submitted in the microsite category.

Other

  • Fearless Client: Best work done on behalf of a client that pushes the boundaries of advertising or design. Can be entered by an agency or by the client.

  • Self-Promotion Single/Campaign: Best print, digital or non-traditional item(s) by an agency or individual with the intended purpose of self-promotion. *Entries in this category cannot be submitted into any other category other than the Craft Categories.

Outdoor

  • Outdoor Series: Best outdoor, large format paid media ad series designed to reach consumers in an outdoor environment. Examples include: print or digital billboards, transit shelters and murals.

  • Outdoor Single: Best outdoor, large format paid media ad single designed to reach consumers in an outdoor environment. Examples include: print or digital billboards, transit shelters and murals.

Photography

  • Photo Illustration: Best use of post-production techniques for a photo single or series

  • Photo Series: Best photo series for use in advertising or editorial application

  • Photo Single: Best single photo for use in advertising or editorial application

Print

  • Business-to-Business: Best print or digital communication piece designed for a business audience.

  • Direct Marketing Single/Campaign: Best print or digital communication piece used to generate a specific response from a consumer. Examples include: mailers, flyers and promotional offers. *Hard copies are encouraged

  • Out-Of-Home Campaign: Media series designed to reach consumers outside of their homes. Examples include: POP, street furniture, vehicle wraps and interior transit ads.

  • Out-Of-Home Single: Media single designed to reach consumers outside of their homes. Examples include: POP, street furniture, vehicle wraps and interior transit ads.

  • Poster Series: Best promotional print poster for events, products or services. Examples include: wild postings.

  • Poster Single: Best promotional print poster for events, products or services. Examples include: wild postings.

  • Print Series: Best paid print media series placed in publications such as newspapers or magazines.

  • Print Single: Best paid print media single placed in publications such as newspapers or magazines.

Public Service

  • Anvil For Good: Best use of media for a non-profit organization completed pro bono by an agency or individual. *Entries in this category cannot be submitted in any other category other than the Craft Categories.

Strategy

  • Integrated Media Strategy: Best media strategy for an ad campaign that uses a minimum of three different mediums to promote a product, service or brand.

Video - Non Broadcast

  • Video - Long Form: Non-broadcast video longer than 90 seconds but less than 15 minutes in length

  • Video - Short Form: Non-broadcast video not to exceed 90 seconds in length
